History
The LC-M Band Program
has a long history of excellence. Starting in 1977-78, when soon-to-be
Head Band Director, Nelson Nolden began teaching as Assistant Band
Director, the band earned its 1st UIL Sweepstakes Rating in the history
of the school.
In
78-79 the band program earned its second UIL Sweepstakes, which is
designated as earning 1st Division Ratings at UIL Marching Contest, UIL Concert
Contest and UIL Sightreading Contest.
1979-1980
was the first school year that Mr. Nolden was Head Band Director. The
band earned UIL Sweepstakes for the year, as well as giving a performance
for President Reagan on his visit to Beaumont, Texas.
In
1980-81 the band earned 1st Division at UIL Marching Contest and 2nd
Division at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest.
Getting
back on track in 1981-82, the band again received UIL Sweepstakes,
accompanying their advancement to State Marching Contest. The band was
also 1st Runner-up at the Great American Concert Band Contest in Orlando, Florida.
In
1982-83 the band once again earned UIL Sweepstakes and also advanced to
State Marching Contest for a second time.
1983-84
was a busy year. Not only did the band earn UIL Sweepstakes, but they
also advanced to State Marching Contest a third time, earned TMEA Region
X, Class 4A Honor Band, and performed in the Main Street Parade - Magic
Kingdom - Orlando, Florida.
In
1984-85 the band received its 8th UIL Sweepstakes out of the previous 7
years. The band advanced to State Marching Contest and performed at
halftime at a Houston Oiler's Professional Football Game.
The
1985-86 band earned a 9th UIL Sweepstakes, in addition to advancing to
State Marching Contest, making TMEA Region X, Class 4A Honor Band, TMEA
Area E, Class 4A Honor Band, and performing at another halftime at the
Houston Oiler's Professional Football Game.
In
1986-87 the band earned UIL Sweepstakes, advanced to State Marching
Contest and performed in the Main Street USA Parade for the second time,
at the Magic Kingdom, Orlando,
Florida.
In
1987-88 the band earned its 11th UIL Sweepstakes, advanced to State
Marching Contest, earned TMEA Region X, Class 4A Honor Band, and earned
TMEA Area E, Class 4A Honor Band.
In
1988-89 the band earned its 12th UIL Sweepstakes and advanced to State
Marching Contest, placing 6th in Prelims.
1989-90
was an outstanding year for the LC-M Band. The Band earned its 13th UIL Sweepstakes
trophy, TMEA Region X, Class 4A Honor Band, TMEA Area E, Class 4A Honor
Band, TMEA Class 4A State Honor Band, performed in Concert at TMEA, State
Convention in San Antonio, Texas, received a Letter of Commendation from
Governor Bill Clements and gave its 3rd performance in the Main Street
USA Parade at the Magic Kingdom, Orlando, Florida.
In
1990-91 the band earned UIL Sweepstakes for the 14th time, as well as
performing a 3rd time at a Houston Oiler's Professional Football Game
Halftime.
In
1991-92 the band earned UIL Sweepstakes, but after winning State Honor
Band, was not eligible again until 1992-93. The band did, however, earn
UIL State Solo and Ensemble Class 4A Sweepstakes winner, which means they
had more medals at State level then any other Class 4A School. In that
year Mr. Nolden was also presented the "Key to the City" (Orange, Texas)
by Mayor Dan Mohon. This was also the year that UIL restricted bands from
advancing to State Marching Contest every other year.
In
1992-93 the band earned a 16th UIL Sweepstakes trophy, as well as a 1st
Division Trophy and 1st Runner-up in Class 4A at the Winter Park
Ski/Music Festival, in Winter
Park, Colorado.
In
1993-94 the band earned a their 17th UIL Sweepstakes, along with being
named TMEA Region X, Class 4A Honor Band, TMEA Area E, Class 4A Honor
Band and advancing to State Marching Contest.
In
1994-95 the band earned an 18th UIL Sweepstakes.
In
1995-96 the band earned their 19th UIL Sweepstakes trophy, advanced to
State Marching Contest, and won the first place trophy for both bands and
Best in Class for the Wind Ensemble at Winter Park Ski/Music Festival, in
Winter Park, Colorado. This was the band's second
trip to Winter Park.
The band additionally had a fourth year All-State member this year.
In
1996-97 the band earned their 20th UIL Sweepstakes trophy and came in
third for TMEA Region X, Class 4A Honor Band.
In
1997-98 the band did not advance to a ninth State Marching Contest, but did
earn their 21st Sweepstakes trophy. They placed 4th at Area Marching
Contest (as second runner-up for State.) The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic
Band earned a 20th UIL Sweepstakes trophy at Concert and Sightreading
Contest.
In
1998-99 the band earned their 22nd Sweepstakes Trophy. Boasting the
largest senior class ever, the band garnished the Region Bands with 33
members, 11 Area band members and 3 All-State members, 2 of which were
first in the state. Those 33 Region Band members tied the school record
set in the early 90s. The Wind Ensemble earned a 21st UIL Sweepstakes
trophy at Concert and Sightreading Contest, came in third for TMEA Region
X, Class 4A Honor Band and the Symphonic Band earned Sweepstakes as well.
The band attended the Winter Park Ski/Music Festival, in Winter Park, Colorado
and the Wind Ensemble was First Runner-Up in Class while the Symphonic
Band won Best in Class. This was the band's third trip to Winter Park.
In
1999-2000 the band earned their 23rd Sweepstakes Trophy. Additionally the
band advanced to State Marching Contest for the 9th and final time under
the direction of Nelson Nolden. He led the Wind Ensemble to a 22nd UIL
Sweepstakes trophy at Concert and Sightreading Contest after putting
another large group of band members into the Region X Bands. There were
two All-State Band members from LC-M. The Symphonic Band also earned yet
another Sweepstakes trophy under the baton of Kevin Stone. This year was
the end of an era. Mr. Nolden went on to become a Fine Arts Director in
the Goose Creek ISD and Mr. Stone became Director of Bands after Mr.
Nolden's resignation.
In
2000-2001 the band earned their 24th Sweepstakes Trophy. Mr. Stone led
the Wind Ensemble to a 23rd UIL Sweepstakes trophy at Concert and
Sightreading Contest. A large group of band members entered the Region X
Bands, and Brent Faulk advanced to the All-State Band level. Mr. Ecker,
the one-year Assistant Band Director, left for a position at McNeese State University
as Director of the String Department, and Mr. Jernigan became the
Assistant Band Director at the High School.
In
2001-2002 the marching band earned a 2nd division rating at Marching
Contest. A large number of band members entered the Region X bands, seven
LCM students went on to the Area level, and two members went to
All-State. Five LCM band members gained a position in the All Region Jazz
bands and three went on to the Area Jazz band. Summer Odom made All
Region Orchestra. Mr. Stone guided the Wind Ensemble to the band's 24th
Sweepstakes rating at Concert and Sight Reading, while the new LCM band
assistant Stacey Clark and the Symphonic band went home with a 1st
division rating as well.
In
2002-2003 the marching band earned a 1st division rating at Marching
Contest. On Nov. 11, the marching band competed in the Sam Houston
Marching Band Festival. A large number of band members entered the Region
X bands, six went on to the Area level. Ten LCM band members gained a
position in the All Region Jazz bands. Mr. Stone led the Wind Ensemble to
their 25th Sweepstakes rating at Concert and Sight Reading, while LCM
band assistant Stacey Killion and the Symphonic band went home with a 1st
division rating.
In
2003-2004 the band earned a 1st division rating at Marching Contest and
went on to the Area Marching band contest in Pasadena where they placed 4th in 1A,
2A, and 4A. A large number of band members entered the Region X bands,
eight LCM students went on to the Area level. Eleven LCM band members
gained a position in the All Region Jazz bands. Mr. Stone guided the Wind
Ensemble to the band's 26th Sweepstakes rating at Concert and Sight
Reading, while LCM band assistant Stacey Killion and the Symphonic band
went home with a 1st division rating as well.
In
2004-2005 the band earned a 1st division rating at Marching
Contest. The band later went on to compete in the Sam Houston
Marching Band festival. 8 LC-M students were selected to be in the
Region X Jazz band, with two going on to Area Jazz. 26 students
were selected to be in the Region X Concert bands, with 11 going on to
area, and one going to state, placing first chair. Later in the
year, the band participated in the 2005 Winter Park Music Festival in Winter Park, Colorado.
Both the LC-M Symphonic band and Wind Ensemble won "Best in Class",
and the Wind Ensemble won the "Grand Champion" award among all
internationally competing high schools. At the end of the year, the
bands participated in the UIL Concert and Sightreading contests and
earned their 27th UIL Sweepstakes Trophy after being awarded 1st division
ratings.
In 2006-2007 the marching band earned
a 1st division rating at the Marching Contest, they also
competed in the NSU marching contest and placed 1st. In all
region LC-M managed to place the most students in the band and Monica
Hambrick made it all the way up to the All State band. Wind Ensemble received
straight 1s in concert and sight reading and won their 29th
UIL Sweepstakes Trophy. Jazz band also competed in the LA Jazz Festival
and brought home a 1st place trophy along with best saxophone and
rhythm section trophies. Cody Shatte also won best drum solo at the competition.
