I would like to thank you for your support in our recent LCI American Diabetes Association School Walk and Blood Drive. It was indeed a tremendous success, in part due to your participation. We thought you would enjoy seeing some of the statistics from this event. First of all, we had 38 pints of blood donated, which translates into 114 lives being saved. We had 445 people walk a total of 2,620 laps, that’s 1,310 miles and we did it while having fun!!

Because of your support we were able to provide bottle water, oranges, and bananas to all of our walkers in addition to having medical personnel on standby to answer questions and assist us in monitoring the blood pressure and blood sugar of adult participants. We were also able to have signs made that marked our ½ mile track indicating how far a person would have to walk to burn the number of calories in a particular food. These signs generated lots of conversations among family and friends regarding their eating choices. (For instance, did you know that you have to walk an entire football field plus both end zones just to burn the number of calories in a single plain M&M?)

Our goal for this event was three fold. First, we wanted to promote an increase in physical activity. Second, we hoped to educate the students and families regarding diabetes. Last, but not least, we wanted to raise funds to help promote research to decrease the incidence of diabetes and hopefully to find a cure.

To this end we raised $3,410!! The results and response to our event far exceeded our expectation, and this was because of the support our team of volunteers that included our PTO, administration, teachers, families, friends and four student leaders (5th graders Taylor Bloodworth and Xavier Epps and 4th graders Kaylee Hennigan and Brady Lyons).

We are already making preparations and looking forward to our 2nd Annual ADA School Walk and Blood Drive scheduled for Friday, March 9, 2007. We hope that you will make plans to join us in promoting health through physical activity, aiding in research & education and fostering social responsibility through encouraging individuals to donate blood to save lives.

Thank you again for your tremendous support.

Sincerely,
