Gods, Heroes & Monsters

Greek/Roman Mythology Research Project

There will be two test grades involved in this assignment; you will be graded on your presentation of information surrounding your character and on the creation of a three-dimensional project that represents your character.  You cannot pass for the six weeks if you do not do this assignment.

The Presentation (one test grade)

Research your character thoroughly and be prepared to teach the class on the following points:

*   Name (Greek and Roman)

*   Origin (Where did he/she/it come from?  Parents?  Story involved in the character’s creation?)

*   Appearance (How is the character described?)

*   Realm of Influence (What does he/she/it rule over or protect?)

*   Enemies and Major Conflicts (Who did the character fight, and why?)

*   Related City (dedicated to the god, hometown to the hero, plagued by the monster…)

*   Symbols (By what symbol or symbols is your character known?)

*   Epithets (Does the character have any names earned through his/her/its actions?)

*   Constellations & Heavenly Bodies (Is there anything in the sky named after the character?)

*   Death (Did your character have an end or is he/she/it immortal?)

Your presentation will be what your classmates rely on to learn the material and pass the mythology exam.  You must do a good job researching and communicating the information to the class.  You may use note cards when you teach, but you may not read a prepared paper to the class. You are expected to know the information and teach it, not read it to the class.  Mythology was an oral tradition based in stories.  Know at least one of your character’s stories that you can tell the class. The Project (one test grade)

In addition to teaching the class, you will create a visual aide that will represent your character.  The project must be three-dimensional (made of cloth, clay, wood, etc.) and not two-dimensional (like a picture or poster.)  You are to sculpt, sew, model or build an object that depicts your character, your character’s symbol, your character’s temple, realm of influence, etc…You are not expected to be an artist; you are expected to take your time and turn in the best object you can.  You cannot turn in a store bought object for your project.  If your character’s symbol is a rose, you cannot bring in a silk (or real) rose. If your character’s symbol is a wolf, you cannot bring in a plastic toy wolf.  Create something with your own hands and do a good job.  Have fun.
