Empowering Science Education Through Technology™

Empowering Science Education through Technology” (E-SET) is a virtual science community based on an innovative online and field study learning program. E-SET seamlessly integrates technology into science education by means of an interdisciplinary online curriculum, collaboration, and inquiry/project based activities centered on Texas’ rivers, coastlines, and geologic features. Through innovative conferences, seminars, and online workshops with leading science education professionals, teachers, principals, and administrators will have access to ongoing, sustained professional development to further the use of technology in the classroom. Using the technologies and equipment provided by the grant, students and teachers have the opportunity to attain higher-level thinking skills by analyzing water data, conducting relevant research, and collaborating on findings with schools across the state. E-SET leverages award-winning programs such as Cyberways and Waterways? (CW) as well as the University of Texas, Austin, Institute for Geophysics National Science Foundation (NSF) programs.

TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS
Austin, Brazosport, Brownwood, Colorado, Corpus Christi, Eagle Pass, Harlingen, Laredo, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Northside (San Antonio), Palacios, Pflugerville, Presidio, San Felipe-Del Rio, Shamrock, Van Vleck

THE OPPORTUNITY
E-SET integrates the best practices of proven, research-based inquiry and project-based studies, centered on the geosciences and crucial, relevant issues impacting all Texans – water. The program provides an overall learning environment and process that promotes teacher competency in technology applications, improves student achievement and attitudes towards learning, and represents an effective model for innovative applications of technology. Teachers and curricula/technical coordinators will work together to implement effective E-SET geoscience curricula modules that are research-based and fully aligned to the TEKS/TAKS. They will collaborate with other teachers and schools on best practices relative to the integration of technology. E-SET is also designed to promote community and parental involvement in the learning process.

Making the Connections-TARGET

High School Language Arts

Fiscal Agent: Birdsville ISD

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Making the Connections (MC) grant provides innovative teaching and learning technologies combined with educator preparation and development specifically designed for English/Language Arts teachers. Teachers will receive equipment such as laptop computers and multimedia projectors along with training to help teachers attain the capacity, skills, competence, and confidence necessary to integrate technology successfully into everyday classroom life. The program has been made possible through the Technology Applications Readiness Grants for Empowering Texas (TARGET), a statewide grant funded by the No Child Left Behind Act.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The MC program will enhance student achievement by improving teacher competencies, providing innovative language arts and interdisciplinary curricula, and promoting the active involvement of parents and community organizations in the learning environment. The program will be implemented with a series of classroom modules developed by a team of teachers, educators, university leaders, representatives from governmental and non-profit agencies as well as private sector partners. These modules will be fully grounded in fulfilling TEKS requirements and preparing students for TAKS tests. In addition, participants will be involved with leading professionals through innovative conferences such as SXSW and the Austin Film Festival/Heart of Screenwriters Contest.

Brazos-Sabine Connection

Professional educators from the Brazos-Sabine Connection are continuing a collaborative effort to improve student achievement by integrating educational technologies throughout the entire educator preparation and development program. The consortium believes that the introduction of technology into classrooms can significantly increase the potential for learning, especially when it is used to support collaboration, information access, and the expression and representation of students' thoughts and ideas. Technology is viewed as a tool for learning and a medium for thinking, collaborating, and communicating.
