English as a Second Language(ESL)

The goal of Little Cypress-Mauriceville C.I.S.D.’s ESL Program is to develop English social language proficiency and English academic language proficiency so that English Language Learners (ELLs) can function independently in the mainstream classroom. To this end, all instruction is conducted in English. A standards-based curriculum is used for all English language learners (ELLs) and is implemented through Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.

What is Sheltered Instuction Observation Protocol?

The English as a Second Language Program is an intensive program of instruction designed to develop proficiency in the comprehension, speaking, reading, and composition in the English language as well as systematic development of academic language. Instruction in English as a second language is aligned with the student's level of English proficiency and his or her level of academic achievement. The district modifies the instruction, pacing, and materials to ensure that limited English proficient students have a full opportunity to master the essential knowledge and skills of the required curriculum. The district employs the sheltered instruction observational protocol approach to ESL instruction by trained teachers at the elementary and secondary levels.
